Supporting Veterans for Veteran in Care: Mariposa Care Group’s Great North Run Challenge

20 August

This September, Mariposa Care Group is proud to be supporting ‘Veterans for Veterans in Care’ through a group-wide charity sponsored walk; bringing together residents and teams across Mariposa and Papillon Care, as well as Lady of the Vale care home, in Altrincham.

From 7th to 13th September 2026, residents and staff from each care home will walk or cycle 13.1 miles – the same distance as the Great North Run. The timing is especially meaningful, as several members of the ‘Veterans for Veterans in Care’ charity will be taking part in the race itself. By completing our challenge just ahead of their event, we hope those taking part on the day will feel uplifted and united in comradeship with our care home community.

Veterans for Veterans in Care Visiting Mariposa Care Residents

John Hambling, Chairman of Veterans for Veterans in Care, commented on the challenge. He said:

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Mariposa Care Group for their enthusiasm, generosity and unwavering commitment to the veterans living within their homes. This partnership demonstrates what can be achieved when care providers and charities work together with a shared purpose.

Every step taken by residents, staff, families and supporters is a step towards ensuring that veterans living in care are recognised, valued and never forgotten. The funds raised through this fantastic initiative will help us continue our mission of locating, engaging and supporting the estimated 26,000 veterans living in care homes across England and Wales, reconnecting them with the military community and the comradeship they deserve.

On behalf of everyone at Veterans for Veterans in Care, I would like to thank Mariposa Care Group for standing alongside us and helping to make a real difference to the lives of those who once served our nation.”

This latest initiative also reflects Mariposa Care Group’s continued commitment to supporting veterans in our care, demonstrated through our Armed Forces Covenant pledge and Veteran Friendly Accreditation across many of the homes taking part.

By working together to complete the Mariposa Care Group sponsored walk ahead of the Great North Run, we hope to show our unified support for those taking part in the event, while also reinforcing our group-wide commitment to veterans across all our homes.”
